William Sturgis Thomas papers, 1892-1935.

Correspondence, 1892-1935, including letters received and carbon copies of letters sent. The collection includes many letters from Thomas's children, relatives, friends and acquaintances, other doctors, and patients. They pertain to his work as a physician, more particularly as an allergist; his association with St. Luke's Hospital; his interest in the genealogy of the Thomas and related families; the authorship of "A Visit from St. Nicholas," which Thomas believed was written by Major Henry Livingston rather than by Clement C. Moore; his efforts to get Dr. John Thomas's Revolutionary War commissions from the Pension Office; his research for, and publication of his Field book of common mushrooms (New York: G. P. Putnam's sons, 1936), and his continued interest in mushrooms; a few letters about his service during World War I, including some letters from other doctors doing service; membership in numerous organizations, historical, medical, religious, etc.; and his interest in the flute.
